RESUMO

In today's era, nanoparticles (NPs) have become an integral part of human life, finding extensive applications in various fields of science, pharmacy, medicine, industry, electronics, and communication. The increasing popularity of NP usage worldwide is a testament to their tremendous potential. However, the widespread deployment of NPs unavoidably leads to their release into the environmental matrices, resulting in persistence in ecosystems and bioaccumulation in organisms. Understanding the environmental behavior of NPs poses a significant challenge due to their nanoscale size. Given the current environmental releases of NPs, known negative consequences, and the limited knowledge available for risk management, comprehending the toxicity of NPs in ecosystems is both awaiting and crucial. The present review aims to unravel the potential environmental influences of nano-scaled materials, and provides in-depth inferences of the current knowledge and understanding in this field. The review comprehensively summarizes the sources, fate, transport, toxicity, health risks, and remediation solutions associated with NP pollution in aquatic and soil ecosystems. Furthermore, it addresses the knowledge gaps and outlines further investigation priorities for the sustainable control of NP pollution in these environments. By gaining a holistic understanding of these aspects, we can work toward ensuring the responsible and sustainable use of NPs in today's fast-growing world.

Background: Myocardial injury is a prevalent complication observed in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and is strongly associated with severe illness and in-hospital mortality. However, the long-term consequences of myocardial injury on clinical outcomes remain poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the impact of myocardial injury on both acute-phase and long-term prognosis in COVID-19 patients. Methods: A retrospective, observational study was conducted on all patients who received treatment at the Intensive Care Center for COVID-19 patient, University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City (UCICC), from August 3rd, 2021, to October 28th, 2021. Results: A total of 582 patients were enrolled in the study, of which 55.3% were female. The mean age of participants was 63.3 ± 16.2. Out of these patients, 330 cases (56.8%) showed myocardial injury. Compared to patients without myocardial injury, those with myocardial injury were older and had a higher incidence of chronic diseases including hypertension, ischemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease. They also presented with more severe respiratory failure upon admission and showed a more pronounced abnormality in inflammation and kidney function tests. Furthermore, the in-hospital mortality rate was significantly higher in the group with myocardial injury (49.7% vs 14.3%, p < 0.001). After adjusting for age, gender, comorbidities, renal function, and disease severity at admission, myocardial injury emerged as an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality (OR = 3.758, 95% CI 1.854-7.678, p < 0.001). Among successfully discharged COVID-19 patients, the all-cause mortality rate after a median follow-up of 18.4 months was 7.9%. Patients with myocardial injury had a significantly higher long-term mortality rate compared to those without myocardial injury (14.0% vs. 3.2%, p < 0.001). However, multivariable Cox regression analysis did not find myocardial injury to be a significant predictor of long-term mortality (HR = 2.128, 95% CI 0.792-5.712, p = 0.134). Conclusions: Myocardial injury is a common and serious complication in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, associated with increased in-hospital mortality. However, it does not significantly impact long-term mortality in successfully discharged COVID-19 patients.

Light-emitting diodes are increasingly used as artificial light sources in Haematococcus pluvialis cultivation due to the fact of their energy advantages. The immobilized cultivation of H. pluvialis in pilot-scale angled twin-layer porous substrate photobioreactors (TL-PSBRs) was initially performed with a 14/10 h light/dark cycle and showed relatively low biomass growth and astaxanthin accumulation. In this study, the illumination time with red and blue LEDs at a light intensity of 120 µmol photons m-2 s-1 was increased to 16-24 h per day. With a light/dark cycle of 22/2 h, the biomass productivity of the algae was 7.5 g m-2 day-1, 2.4 times higher than in the 14/10 h cycle. The percentage of astaxanthin in the dry biomass was 2%, and the total amount of astaxanthin was 1.7 g m-2. Along with the increase in light duration, adding 10 or 20 mM NaHCO3 to the BG11-H culture medium over ten days of cultivation in angled TL-PSBRs did not increase the total amount of astaxanthin compared with only CO2 addition at a flow rate of 3.6 mg min-1 to the culture medium. Adding NaHCO3 with a 30-80 mM concentration inhibited algal growth and astaxanthin accumulation. However, adding 10-40 mM NaHCO3 caused algal cells to accumulate astaxanthin at a high percentage in dry weight after the first four days in TL-PSBRs.

Vaccines are strongly recommended globally as an effective measure to prevent serious illness from and spread of COVID-19. Concerns about safety following vaccination continue to be the most common reason that people do not accept the vaccine. This retrospective study was carried out on 4341 people who received the first dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, BBIBP-CorV, or mRNA-1273 vaccine at Jio Health Clinic in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Post-injection side effects were either reported by participants or actively collected by health care staff by means of telemedicine. Local side effects were reported by 35.5% of all individuals, with pain being the most common symptom (33.3%). Systemic side effects were reported by 44.2% of individuals, with fever (25.3%) and fatigue (21.4%) being the most common. Age ≤60 years, female gender, and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 were significant independent risk factors for both local and systemic side effects, while a history of allergy was significant as a risk factor for local side effects. A total of 43 individuals (1.0%) reported concerning symptoms of rare severe complications, which were addressed and treated by physicians via Jio Health app.

In this study, samples from 429 dog individuals across three main regions of Vietnam (Southern Vietnam (SVN), Central Vietnam (CVN), and Northern Vietnam (NVN)) were collected to analyze the 582 bp region mtDNA HVI, so as to study the genetic diversity and to screen the rare haplotype E in the Vietnamese village dog population. Nine new haplotypes A, two new haplotypes B, and three haplotypes C were unique to Vietnam dogs, in which the new haplotypes An3, An7, Cn1, and Cn3 concerned mutations at new polymorphism sites (15,517, 15,505, 15,479, and 15,933, respectively) which have not been previously reported. The detection of haplotypes A9 and A29, and the appearance of haplotype A200 in the two individual dogs sampled support that the Southeast Asian dog is the ancestor of today's Australian dingo and Polynesian dog. The two rare haplotypes E (E1 and E4) were reconfirmed in Vietnamese dogs and discussed. This study also contributes to strengthening the theory of domestication of dogs to the south of the Yangtze River and the Southeast Asian origin of the dingo.

An angled twin-layer porous substrate photobioreactor (TL-PSBR) using LED light was designed to cultivate Nannochloropsis oculata. Flocculation and sedimentation by modification of pH to 11 were determined as the optimal method for harvesting the N. oculata inoculum. The following optimised parameters were found: tilt angle 15°, Kraft 220 g m-2 paper as substrate material, initial inoculum density of 12.5 g m-2, 140 µmol photons m-2 s-1 light intensity, and a light/dark cycle of 6:6 (h). Test cultivation for 14 days was performed under optimised conditions. The total dried biomass standing crop was 75.5 g m-2 growth area with an average productivity of 6.3 g m-2 d-1, the productivity per volume of used culture medium was 126.2 mg/L d-1, total lipid content 21.9% (w/w), and the highest productivity of total lipids was 1.33 g m-2 d-1. The dry algal biomass contained 3% eicosapentaenoic acid (w/w), 3.7% palmitoleic acid (w/w), and 513 mg kg-1 vitamin E. The optimisation of N. oculata cultivation on an angled TL-PSBR system yielded promising results, and applications for commercial products need to be further explored.

Inappropriate use of antibiotics in animal production system is one of the major factors leading to the antibiotic resistance (ABR) development. In Vietnam, the ABR situation is crucial as antibiotics have been used indiscriminately for disease prevention and as growth promoters in animals. Thus, a thorough understanding on the ABR in veterinary settings would be beneficial to the Vietnam public health authority in formulating timely interventions. This review aimed to provide information on the current status of antibiotic usage in animal husbandry in Vietnam, identified gaps in research, and suggested possible solutions to tackle ABR. To this end, data on ABR in animals were extracted from 3 major electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect) in the period of January 2013-December 2020. The review findings were reported according to PRISMA, which highlighted the emergence and persistence of ABR in bacterial isolates, including Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., and Salmonella species, obtained from pigs and poultry. The lack of awareness of Vietnamese farmers on the antibiotic utilization guidelines was one of the main causes driving the animal ABR. Hence, this paper calls for interventions to restrict antibiotics use in food-producing animals by national action plan and antibiotics control programs. Additionally, studies to evaluate knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of the community are required to promote rational use of antibiotics in all sectors.

Paphiopedilum is among the most popular ornamental orchid genera due to its unique slipper flowers and attractive leaf coloration. Most of the Paphiopedilum species are in critical danger due to over-exploitation. They were listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which prevents their being traded across borders. While most Paphiopedilum species are distinctive, owing to their respective flowers, their vegetative features are more similar and undistinguished. Hence, the conservation of these species is challenging, as most traded specimins are immature and non-flowered. An urgent need exists for effective identification methods to prevent further illegal trading of Paphiopedilum species. DNA barcoding is a rapid and sensitive method for species identification, at any developmental stage, using short DNA sequences. In this study, eight loci, i.e., ITS, LEAFY, ACO, matK, trnL, rpoB, rpoC1, and trnH-psbA, were screened for potential barcode sequences on the Vietnamese Paphiopedilum species. In total, 17 out of 22 Paphiopedilum species were well identified. The studied DNA sequences were deposited to GenBank, in which Paphiopedilum dalatense accessions were introduced for the first time. ACO, LEAFY, and trnH-psbA were limited in amplification rate for Paphiopedilum. ITS was the best single barcode. Single ITS could be used along with nucleotide polymorphism characteristics for species discrimination. The combination of ITS + matK was the most efficient identification barcode for Vietnamese Paphiopedilum species. This barcode also succeeded in recognizing misidentified or wrongly-named traded samples. Different bioinformatics programs and algorithms for establishing phylogenetic trees were also compared in the study to propose quick, simple, and effective tools for practical use. It was proved that both the Bayesian Inference method in the MRBAYES program and the neighbor-joining method in the MEGA software met the criteria. Our study provides a barcoding database of Vietnamese Paphiopedilum which may significantly contribute to the control and conservation of these valuable species.

Graphene is an interesting material with a number of desirable electrical properties. Graphene-based negative differential resistance (NDR) devices hold great potential for enabling the implementation of several elements required in electronic circuits and systems. In this article we propose a novel device structure that exhibits NDR using single layer graphene that is able to be fabricated using standard lithography techniques. Using theoretical simulation, we show that graphene nanoribbon (GNR) junctions exhibit NDR effect if a gap is introduced in the structure in the transport direction of the ribbon. Using standard lithography techniques, we produce a GNR and use electro-migration to create a nanogap by breaking the GNR device. Scanning electron microscopy images show the formation of a tunnel gap. The predicted NDR phenomenon is experimentally verified in the current-voltage characteristic of the device. The linear and non-linear characteristics of the I-V responses before and after breakdown confirm that the NDR effect arises from the tunnel gap.

As part of clinical diagnosis, a clinician is required to detect disease causing antigens, bacteria, or viruses in serum, saliva, or other biological samples. Usually, this requires the sample to be sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis. Silicon nanowires can be made into sensitive molecular sensors. When being functionalized with antibodies, they are capable of detecting femto molar concentrations of antigens in real time. Biological molecules at a pH different from their isoelectric point exhibit a net charge. When an antigen attaches to the antibody on the nanowire, the net charged on the antigen displaces free carriers in the nanowire changing its conductance. To date, detection methods have been based upon directly measuring the change in dc conductance. This is difficult and requires sensitive low-noise amplifiers and high-resolution analog-to-digital converters. This is not ideal for low-cost and highly integrated systems. In this paper, it is demonstrated that nanowires exhibit an ac-transfer function that resembles that of a high-pass filter. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time this effect has been reported. Furthermore, it is illustrated that as molecules with a higher net charge attach to the nanowire and displace more charge carriers within the nanowire channel, the filter's corner frequency decreases. This property of silicon nanowires is exploited to build a low-cost real-time antigen detection system.

A study on 222 women who had given birth from January 2003 to March 2004 at Thanh Mien district, Hai Duong province in order to define several risk factors of low birth weight. Results: the average weight of the newborns was 2805.4 ± 529.7gram. Most of the mothers had secondary education level or lower (78.4%). Average height of mothers was 153.9 ± 5,2cm; 95.5% of mothers had height ≥145 cm. More than 90% of mothers’ weight before pregnant was ≥40 kg. Average number of pregnant was 2.1± 1.2 times. Average weight gain of mothers in 9 months of pregnancy was 7.9±3.4kg. 91% of mothers had been comfortable during pregnancy. Mothers who had uncomfortable feeling during pregnancy had higher risk of low birth weight than mothers who had not that. The rate of ferrous sulfate supplement accounted for 69.4%. There were 41% of mothers used at least one kind of drugs during pregnancy.
